Padres concession stands change name of 'FTD Burger' after apparent shot at Dodgers goes viral

San Diego’s thoughts on the Los Angeles Dodgers have been clear for some time now, but it was only this week the world noticed they had apparently taken burger form.

An “FTD Burger” sold by burger chain Hodad’s at its Petco Park locations went viral on Thursday, though it turned out they had been sale for years before social media finally got ahold of them.

You probably don’t need our help to figure out the intended meaning of that acronym.

Some also noted the presence of three onion rings on the burger, taken to mean the Dodgers’ three recent World Series rings, though that might be a little generous given that burger named to curse out a division foe are rarely meant to draw attention to their successes. Either Hodad’s or the Padres themselves noticed the attention, as the menu boards featured a change for Friday’s game against the Athletics. As Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune documented, the offering had been, let’s say, clarified as a “For the Diegans Burger.”

It turns out that was only one of the new definitions of “FTD,” as other locations featured a “For the Division Burger,” a “Foul to Dinger Burger” and a “For the Dugout Burger.”

Since 2020, the Padres have emerged as the Dodgers’ most persistent foe in the NL West, but with limited success overall. Over the past six seasons, they have a 33-57 record against Los Angeles in the regular season. They did beat them in the 2022 NLDS, but have lost two other series to them and are still looking to win their first division title two decades.

The rivals are currently fighting it out for first place, with the Dodgers a half-game ahead after taking two of three games in San Diego this week. L.A. will be on the road until next Monday, when we’ll see if any of their vendors have a response.
