Comments Off on French Open: Elina Svitolina upset in quarterfinals as favorites continue to fall at Roland-Garros

A number of the top-seeded players at the French Open have already fallen. Big names like Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic were knocked out of the event early, potentially opening the door for other top-10 seeded players to make their move.

But if Tuesday was any indication, that could also prove to be a tough task, as Elina Svitolina became the most recent top-10 seed to be eliminated from the event.

Svitolina — seeded No. 7 — failed to advance past No. 15 Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals Tuesday. After dropping the first set, Svitolina was able to recover enough to push the match into a third set, but her comeback stopped there. Kostyuk moved on, winning the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

Following the win, Kostyuk was briefly overwhelmed by emotion on the court before greeting Svitolina at the net.

That emotion stayed with Kostyuk after the match, as she wiped tears from her eyes while being interviewed on the court.

Prior to 2026, the French Open hasn’t been kind to Kostyuk. Entering Tuesday, she had won just 40 percent of her matches at the French Open, easily her worst performance at a Grand Slam event. During her previous six appearances in the tournament, Kostyuk was eliminated in the first round four times. Her best performance in the French Open came back in 2021, when she reached the fourth round. She already surpassed that coming into Tuesday’s match against Svitolina.

With the win, Kostyuk will look to take down another top-10 seeded player Thursday, as she’ll face off against No. 8 Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals.

Svitolina, meanwhile, failed to advance past the quarterfinals at the French Open for the sixth time in her career. Though she’s performed well at the tournament, she’s never reached the semifinals.

With Svitolina out, only two top-10 seeds on the women’s side are still active at the 2026 French Open. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka looks dominant so far, and has yet to drop a single set at the event. Andreeva hasn’t been as good, though has only lost one set during her run to the semifinals.
