Brewers giving Jacob Misiorowski an extra day off between starts after first complete game

Jacob Misiorowski probably deserved an extra day off after his last start.

The Milwaukee Brewers announced that their ace right-hander will not pitch in their upcoming three-game series at home versus the Cleveland Guardians. With Monday’s off day, Misiorowski’s next turn in the rotation would have come on Thursday. But he was not listed among the probable pitchers for the series.

Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold said the team decided to give Misiorowski one more day of rest even before his performance on Friday, MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports.

But that looks particularly cognizant after Misiorowski pitched the first complete game of his career in a 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. He racked up 15 strikeouts, threw a 105 mph that’s the fastest ever recorded by a starting pitcher and pitched past the seventh inning for the first time in 29 major-league starts.

Oh, and he did it all in 95 pitches.

Arnold told reporters that Misiorowski said he felt “great” after Friday’s performance. But the extra rest likely comes at a good time anyway.

“I think it actually could be a good thing,” Arnold told MLB.com.

Though the Brewers’ top baseball executive may not hear that opinion from the Brewers’ sales and marketing team. More tickets would surely have been sold at American Family Field for a Misiorowski home start. (No offense to Shane Drohan, who has a 3.59 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings, but there’s only one Misiorowski.)

With the added day off and a full week between starts, Misiorowski is now presumably slated to start on Friday versus the Atlanta Braves. (Though that has not yet been officially announced by the Brewers.) Whether he gets a regular four days’ rest after that remains to be seen.
