Noah Lyles breaks world record in 150m at Golden Spike meet, beating Australian sensation Gout Gout

U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles added a world record to his extensive résumé Tuesday, topping a field of runners including Australian sensation Gout Gout to set a world-best time of 14.67 seconds in the 150 meters at the Golden Spike meet.

South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile finished second at 14.78 seconds in a time that also beat the previous world record. Gout finished in third place at 14.96 seconds. Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson held the previous world record with a time of 14.92 that he set in April in Miramar, Florida.

Lyles, the reigning Olympic champion at 100 meters from the 2024 Paris Games, was in the pack with the race leaders after the turn. But he broke free from the field down the straightaway to secure the victory and the world record.

Dambile and Gout celebrated the accomplishment with Lyles after they crossed the finish line.

The 150 meters is rarely contested and is not part of the Olympic circuit that features 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. The in-between distance is generally reserved for exhibition events and is featured at the annual Golden Spike meet hosted in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Lyles is a four-time world champion in the 200 meters in addition to his Olympic gold at 100 meters. Two years since his Olympic gold medal, he remains among the world’s elite sprinters.

Gout, 18, is one of his top competitors. The Australian set the under-20 world record in the 200 meters in April at the Australian Athletics Championships at 19.67 seconds, a time that bested legendary sprinter Usain Bolt’s at the same age.
