Thunder's Mark Daigneault, Pistons' JB Bickerstaff, Gonzaga's Mark Few reportedly expected to coach on Erik Spoelstra's USA Basketball staff

Erik Spoelstra's USA Basketball staff is expected to include Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, Detroit Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff and Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday.

Spoelstra is spearheading the USA Basketball men's national team this Olympic cycle. The longtime Miami Heat frontman was handed the keys to the national squad last October. He was appointed head coach of the team through 2028 by USA Basketball men's national team managing director Grant Hill, a Basketball Hall of Famer who won gold at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Spoelstra's staff will be tasked with helping a star-studded American crew defend its status as the best in the world on home soil, with the 2028 Olympics taking place in Los Angeles. The men's national team has collected five straight gold medals.

In addition to leading the Heat for 18 seasons — winning two NBA championships and six Eastern Conference titles along the way — Spoelstra has an Olympic gold medal in his trophy case. As an assistant, he worked under Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, the last conductor of the national team, throughout the most recent Olympic cycle, which culminated in Team USA defeating France in Paris in 2024.

Spoelstra will now pilot the group at the 2027 FIBA Men's World Cup in Doha, Qatar, before overseeing its potential run at the LA Olympics in 2028. In the lead-up to both major competitions, he'll coach at training camps and USA Basketball Showcase exhibitions.

Daigneault, Bickerstaff and Few will reportedly be on his bench.

Few and Gonzaga are synonymous. He's been a fixture on the Bulldogs' coaching staff since the 1990s, occupying the program's head-coaching position since 1999. He's led Gonzaga to a pair of Final Four appearances. The 63-year-old Few already has significant USA Basketball experience under his belt. Like Spoelstra, he, too, was an assistant for Kerr from 2022-24. And actually, he served as Spoelstra's assistant in 2021 for the USA men's select team that aided the gold medal-winning Olympic team in preparing for the Tokyo Games.

Additionally, Few took on the role of head coach of the 2015 U.S. Pan American men's basketball team. That cohort, made up of collegiate players, won bronze. Before that, Few was an assistant coach for the 2012 USA U-18 national team that took gold, and he was a court coach for the 2009 USA U-19 World Cup/World University Games Team training camp.

Daigneault is at the helm of a Thunder team with dynastic hopes in an NBA era defined by parity. Oklahoma City was stopped short of the NBA Finals this year, but OKC won it all during the 2024-25 season. Daigneault is responsible for three consecutive 57-plus-victory campaigns and is 275-207 as the Thunder's head coach.

Bickerstaff, meanwhile, has been in charge of four NBA teams: the Houston Rockets (2015-16 as interim head coach), the Memphis Grizzlies (2017-19), the Cleveland Cavaliers (2020-24) and the Pistons (2024-present). This past season, he guided the Pistons to the No. 1 seed in the East to the tune of a 60-22 record, the franchise's best since 2005-06.
