Katherine Legge was going for history on Sunday. She was aiming to be the first woman to complete “The Double,” which is racing the full Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Legge wrecked on lap 18 of the Indianapolis 500. She will miss the remainder of the race, but is now expected to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to race in the Coca-Cola 600 later this afternoon.

Ryan Hunter-Rey spun coming out of a turn, and while Legge avoided him, the maneuver took her across the track and into the wall.

The damage took her car out of the race. Now, Legge will make the trek from Indianapolis to Charlotte to compete in the Coca-Cola 600. It is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. ET, and Legge will start 37th after qualifying was rained out Saturday.

After wrecking, she spoke with the media at the race. “I couldn’t see anything because of the smoke, and I went for the high side as he was moving down the track, and he came back up the track, so last minute I had to go left.”

Legge added that she was “fine, just frustrated.” She also admitted before the Coca-Cola 600 later in the day that she needs an “attitude adjust because right now, I’m pissed.”

“The Double” is the term given to completing all 1,100 miles of racing between the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

The rare feat has been attempted by only five drivers, with Legge now being the sixth. Legge joins John Adretti, Robby Gordon, Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart and Kyle Lason as drivers to have attempted “The Double.”

Of the five that have even attempted to pull it off, only Tony Stewart has completed it. He completed the feat in 2001 and even finished in the top six in both races.

This was Legge’s fifth time competing in the Indianapolis 500. Her best finish at the race was 22nd in 2012, and she came in 29th last year.
