What are Tarot Cards?

Tarot cards are a storied system of visual archetypes used for centuries as a tool for divination, meditation, and self-reflection. While their exact origins are often debated, they emerged in 15th-century Europe as playing cards before evolving into a popular occult practice during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, they serve as a psychological mirror, helping individuals navigate life’s complexities through symbolic storytelling. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Understanding the Cards

A standard deck consists of 78 cards divided into two primary groups: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The 22 Major Arcana cards represent significant life lessons and universal themes. Starting with the Fool’s journey and ending with the World, these cards signify major transitions, karmic influences, and spiritual milestones. Familiar icons like the Lovers, Death, and the Tower fall into this category, often pointing to big-picture shifts in a person’s path. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

The remaining 56 cards comprise the Minor Arcana, which focuses on the mundane, day-to-day aspects of human existence. These are divided into four suits—traditionally Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands—each corresponding to a specific element and area of life. Cups typically deal with emotions and relationships, Pentacles with material wealth and career, Swords with intellect and conflict, and Wands with passion and creativity. Like a standard deck of playing cards, each suit runs from Ace to ten, followed by four Court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]

Analysis

Reading tarot is less about predicting a fixed future and more about interpreting the energy of the present. By laying cards in specific patterns called “spreads,” a reader can analyze the relationships between the images to gain insight into a specific question. Ultimately, tarot functions as a narrative framework that empowers users to explore their intuition, uncover hidden perspectives, and find clarity within the chaos of daily life. [16, 17, 18]
