Pirates add star rookie Konnor Griffin to 10-day IL with flexor strain, activate Ryan O'Hearn

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin on the 10-day injured list on Sunday due to a right elbow strain.

In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh is activating Ryan O’Hearn, and he is in the starting lineup Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, batting fourth as the designated hitter.

Griffin made headlines early in the season when the Pirates called him up after a brief five-game stint at Triple-A. He debuted on April 3 against the Baltimore Orioles and finished with an RBI double in three plate appearances.

The rookie shortstop is currently slashing .270/.327/.429 with a .729 OPS. He has been streaky this season, but Griffin hits the IL with an active four-game hitting streak.

Griffin has reportedly been playing through the strain, per GM Ben Cherington, but is now focusing on healing fully. Cherington said the shortstop is already progressing well, even threw on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for only a short time.

Pittsburgh is currently 31-28 on the season as of Sunday morning and is in fourth place in the NL Central.

If Griffin misses the minimum 10 days, his target return would be eligible to be activated on Thursday, June 11, when the Pirates are home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
