Week 0 game between NC State and Virginia moved from Brazil to Charlottesville
There won’t be a college football game played in Brazil this season after all.
North Carolina State and Virginia announced Wednesday that their Week Zero matchup in Rio de Janeiro had been moved to Virginia’s campus after an “extensive review with operational partners and international stakeholders.” It was set to be the first FBS game held in South America and was being facilitated by Athlete Advantage, a third-party company.
“This change follows communication from Athlete Advantage, which informed the ACC and participating schools that the event could not be conducted,” a statement said.
“Originally scheduled to be played in Week Zero, the ACC, NC State and Virginia are working with the NCAA and ESPN to confirm the game will remain on the originally scheduled date of Saturday, August 29.”
The game had been scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET. It was the second of two international games scheduled for Week Zero on ESPN. At Noon ET, North Carolina faces TCU in Dublin.
If the game is moved, Week 1 is the only alternative. Both NC State and Virginia are off in Week 1 because of the anticipated travel and do not have a common open date after that.
Eight games are currently scheduled for Week Zero, including three others involving power conference teams. USC hosts San Jose State, Stanford hosts Hawaii and New Mexico State visits Florida State. In Week 3, the second international game of the year will be held when Arizona State and Kansas play each other in London.
