Phillies SP Cristopher Sánchez sets consecutive scoreless innings record for a left-handed pitcher
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cristopher Sánchez set the record for the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak for a left-handed pitcher on Wednesday.
The record dates back to 1893, when the mound was moved to its current distance.
Sánchez entered the game against the San Diego Padres needing just one inning to achieve the mark. He now has 45.2 scoreless innings in a row.
While he has the record for a lefty, he still has his sights on climbing the overall leaderboard. Currently, he sits seventh on the all-time list and would need to reach 59.1 consecutive scoreless innings to set the overall record.

Sánchez last gave up a run against the San Francisco Giants on April 30. He allowed two first-inning runs in the game and then went the rest of the way scoreless.
His most recent exact run was given up with one out gone in the inning. Casey Schmitt singled to left field, scoring Matt Chapman.
Since then, Sánchez has made five starts before Wednesday’s outing and hasn’t allowed a single run (earned or unearned) in any of them.
He last pitched on May 27, ironically against San Diego, and his seven scoreless innings helped him set the Phillies’ all-time record for consecutive scoreless innings for a pitcher, regardless of handedness.
With two consecutive scoreless inning streaks down - franchise and left-handed - Sánchez now will turn his attention to the all-time mark.
His 45.2 inning streak after the first inning on Wednesday has him tied for sixth with Zack Greinke. Sánchez now trails Orel Hershiser (59), Don Drysdale (58), Walter Johnson (55.2), Jack Coombs (53.0) and Bob Gibson (47).
