Christian Eriksen collapses on field, Denmark-Ukraine soccer friendly suspended
Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during Sunday's friendly between Denmark and Ukraine, causing the match to be suspended.
Eriksen clutched his chest during the 64th minute of the match and went down to the field. After receiving treatment, the midfielder was reported to be conscious and doing better.
The footballer did reportedly lose consciousness momentarily.
Denmark's doctor Morten Boesen spoke about the event.
"Christian is doing well and left the pitch himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is beating as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.
Now he needs to be further examined at the hospital to find out what caused the incident.
We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was okay."
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Eriksen has collapsed on the pitch. Five years ago, he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 during a group stage match against Finland.
During that event, his heart reportedly stopped for five minutes before he was revived. Eriksen went on to fully recover after he was given an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
With the match suspended, Denmark will be declared the 2-1 winner. Patrick Dorgu and Jakim Maelhe scored the team's two goals in the first half.
Now all attention turns to Eriksen and his recovery.
