Georgia safety Ja'Marley Riddle reportedly arrested on drug, speeding charges months after transferring to program

The Georgia Bulldogs are gathering information after safety Ja’Marley Riddle was reportedly arrested on drug and speeding charges, according to ESPN.

Riddle, who transferred from East Carolina to Georgia in January, was reportedly arrested May 8 after officers noticed his car weaving in and out of traffic and accelerating as fast as 95 mph, per a police report obtained by WGIG 98.7 FM.

Once officers pulled Riddle over, they observed that the safety was “extremely nervous” and “shaking” when speaking with police. An officer also reportedly smelled an “overwhelming odor of marijuana” coming from the car and asked Riddle if he would consent to his car being searched. Riddle agreed, and officers found a “large heat-sealed bag” with logos on it indicating it was marijuana. Officers also found vapes stating they contained THC.

Riddle was arrested at that point and eventually charged two felonies — both for possession of a controlled substance — and speeding, a misdemeanor. The two felony charges are for “purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution or sale of marijuana, and sale of a schedule I or II controlled substance,” per ESPN.

Officers noted Riddle was “kind and polite” throughout the investigation. Riddle was reportedly able to post bond on all three charges.

A Bulldogs spokesperson confirmed the school was aware of Riddle’s arrest, telling ESPN:

“We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time."

Riddle transferred to Georgia in January after two seasons with East Carolina. He combined for 65 solo tackles, 7.5 tackles per loss and six interceptions in his two years with the team.
