Indoor Football League: Vegas Knight Hawks stun San Antonio Gunslingers with Hail Mary on game's final play
Senika McKie caught a 40-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on the game’s final play as the Vegas Knight Hawks stunned the San Antonio Gunslingers for a 43-42 victory late Saturday.
McKie jumped in the right corner of the end zone with three defenders around him to haul in the winning pass. Vegas players swarmed McKie as they celebrated the touchdown and the end of their two-game losing streak.
The miraculous catch was a fitting end to a thrilling back-and-forth game as both teams traded highlight plays.
San Antonio appeared to have the game won with its own Hail Mary — a go-ahead 28-yard touchdown pass to Deon Cook that left just five seconds on the clock. The Gunslingers looked poised to pull off the upset in Las Vegas until McKie topped Cook’s heroics.
The Knight Hawks, championship contenders in the Western Conference, led 21-12 at the half. A pair of Gunslinger touchdowns in the third quarter put San Antonio ahead 26-24 heading into the fourth. Quentin Randolph’s touchdown early in the final quarter put Vegas back in front only to have San Antonio answer with its own score.
That set the stage for the frenetic final moments of the game.
The Knight Hawks came into Saturday having lost their previous two games by four points each after winning nine of their first 10 games to start the season. They seemed destined for another tough defeat until McKie rose up in the end zone.
