Comments Off on Wimbledon 2026: Tommy Paul upset in third-round match vs. Hubert Hurkacz

After a quarterfinals showing at Wimbledon in 2024, Tommy Paul looked like he could finally be coming into his own as a player. But his past two trips to the event have ended in disappointment.

Paul was sent packing from Wimbledon earlier than expected Friday, losing to Hubert Hurkacz in four sets (4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-2).

It was a sloppy match for Paul, who was charged with six double faults. Despite that difference, Hurkacz was actually charged with more unforced errors in the match, so Paul's inaccurate serve played a big role in the loss. On top of that, Hurkacz had his serve working well, as he racked up 20 aces in the victory.

It was a disappointing result for the American, who had previously fared well at Wimbledon. Of the four Grand Slam events, Paul's 71 percent win rate at Wimbledon was second-highest, narrowly edging out his 72 percent win rate at the Australian Open. That gap will only get larger following Paul's loss Friday.

Though Paul has shown flashes of success, he's yet to win a single Grand Slam. The closest he's come is the semifinals, which he reached at the Australian Open in 2023. Paul has three quarterfinal appearances in Grand Slams under his belt, his last of which came at the 2025 French Open.

For Hurkacz, it marks his second-ever win vs. Paul. Prior to Friday's match, Paul led the head-to-head matchup against Hurkacz 3-1. It also marks the third time in his past seven attempts that Hurkacz has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. He's made it as far as the semifinals at the event, reaching that stage back in 2021.

Hurkacz will look to continue his run Sunday, when he'll take on Jan-Lennard Struff in the fourth round. It will mark the fifth time the two have squared off head-to-head. Each player has two wins in their four previous meetings.
