Report: Mexico vs. England World Cup match to be moved up several hours to avoid inclement weather

The kickoff time for the World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England may be moved up by several hours, according to a report from Mexican outlet Claro Sports. The matchup was set to kick off at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. local time) on Sunday, but is reportedly being moved to noon in order to avoid inclement weather.

Mexico will be hosting England in Mexico City's Estadio Azteca (known as Estadio Ciudad de México during the tournament), which is an open-air venue. Sunday's forecast in Mexico City includes a thunderstorm and heavy rain expected in the late afternoon, per AccuWeather.

FIFA has not yet confirmed if the schedule change is taking place. In addition, England also appears to be unsure about the timing, with The Times reporting that the English FA spent Friday trying to clarify if the game was actually being rescheduled.

The time change will be difficult for fans who are flying in for the game that morning, but will ironically make it easier for fans in England to watch the game: If rescheduled, the game would begin in the evening in the United Kingdom, rather than at 1 a.m.

The Mexico-England matchup is one of the most anticipated knockout games yet, with England heading into El Tri's hostile home environment in Mexico's biggest stadium. The cheapest get-in price for the match, as of Friday morning, is up to $3,600, per Gametime. It is unclear how the time change will affect the ticket prices.
