Taylor Fritz entered Wednesday with an edge. Though he was the lower-seeded player coming in, Fritz held a 10-5 record over Zverev in 15 singles meetings. Not only that, but Fritz entered Wednesday on a seven-match winning streak against Zverev.

But that streak came to an end, as Zverev turned in a dominant performance against Fritz, beating the American in straight sets(6-4, 6-4, 6-2) at the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Zverev was in control early, especially with his serve. He notched eight aces in the first set against Fritz. He managed to get 82% of his first serves in play during the set, which proved to be the difference in his 6-4 win.

While it was a strong start from Zverev, most of the other stats from the first set were even, suggesting Fritz would put up a fight going forward.

In many ways, Fritz did up his game in the second set. He notched six aces and was excellent scoring points on his first serves. Zverev was simply better. He made just five unforced errors in the set, once again winning 6-4. With those wins under his belt, Zverev sat a set away from advancing to the semifinals.

Fritz looked as though he would rally in the third set, winning the first game to take an early lead. But Zverev took over from there, winning the next five games thanks to some flawless tennis. Once again, Fritz held the advantage with aces, but Zverev just didn't make mistakes when he was able to get to the ball. After six games, Zverev was charged with just two unforced errors.

With the match on the line, Fritz was able to rally for a win in the next game. But coming all the way back in the set proved too difficult. Zverev was able to close things out in the next game, taking the final set 6-2 and winning the match.

Zverev made just one more unforced error in the third set, finishing with three. For the match, he had 15 unforced errors to Fritz's 28. That wasn't the only deciding factor in Zverev's win, but playing a mistake-free match did wonders for the German.

Fritz has threatened at various Grand Slams over the past few seasons, but is still in search of his first Grand Slam victory. Wimbledon has proved one of his more successful Grand Slams, as Fritz reached the quarterfinals in four of his last five attempts. Following Wednesday's loss, he's made it past the round just once in those attempts.

Zverev has one Grand Slam title under his belt already. That came at the 2026 French Open, where he took down Flavio Cobolli to win it all. But winning at Wimbledon has proven difficult for Zverev. Until 2026, he had never advanced past the fourth round at the event.

But this year looks different. Fresh off his French Open win, Zverev is playing his best tennis yet. His 2026 run at Wimbledon suggests Zverev truly has a shot to win the event this year.

It won't be easy, but toppling Fritz was a strong first step. If Zverev wants to win it all, however, he'll need to overcome an even tougher opponent. Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic are still in the hunt for another Wimbledon title. Zverev has had similar struggles vs. both men during their careers, with Sinner holding a 10-4 advantage over Zverev and Djokovic going 9-5 vs. Zverev.

But that's something for future Zverev to worry about. In order to face Sinner or Djokovic, Zverev would have to make it all the way to the finals. In order to do that, he'll have to dispatch wild card Arthur Fery, who took down Cobolli in straight sets Wednesday.

The two have never squared off in a singles match before. While Zverev will enter the match as the favorite, Fery is also playing his best tennis right now. It should make for an intense match when the two take the court Friday.
