Texas Rangers outfielder Brandon Nimmo robbed Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez of a home run with a spectacular catch at the right-field wall, helping Texas to an 8-0 win over Houston on Sunday.

The play occurred in the fourth inning when the score was tied 0-0. Alvarez led off the frame by reaching for a Nathan Eovaldi curveball low in the strike zone and launched it to right field. The drive probably would have put the Astros ahead, but Nimmo leaped for the ball before it went over the wall.

Nimmo could have been prevented from making the catch had the Astros fans standing at the wall interfered with the play. That’s something we’ve seen in recent years during MLB games, notably during Game 4 of the 2024 World Series when New York Yankees fans attempted to rip Mookie Betts’ glove away as he made a catch down the right-field foul line.

However, these fans at Daikin Park stood back and let Nimmo make the play and the veteran outfielder showed his appreciation for that when he went back to his position in the fifth inning. Nimmo gave signed baseballs to the handful of fans sitting where the catch was made.

As one of those fans showed on social media, Nimmo also wrote a personalized message on the baseball.

“Thanks 4 Letting Me Go After It!” Nimmo wrote on the ball, along with his signature.

“As a 31-year Houston Astros season ticket holder and lifelong fan, there was no way I was reaching over that wall and interfering with Brandon Nimmo trying to catch Yordan Alvarez’s solo homer,” Ronald Branch wrote with pictures of the baseball and video of Nimmo giving fans their signed mementos.

“That’s baseball respect right there,” Branch said of Nimmo giving them the signed baseballs. “I was not expecting 2 balls. Loyal Astros fan always… but also loyal to the game itself.”

As mentioned, the Rangers went on to salvage one win in the three-game series with their intra-state rival. Nimmo ended up batting 1-for-4 in addition to saving a run on defense.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven scoreless innings for Texas with eight strikeouts. But he would have given up at least one run if not for Nimmo — and the fans sitting at the right-field wall who let the outfielder do his job. Thanks to a kind, fun gesture from Nimmo, those fans were rewarded for respecting the game.
