Rams QB Matthew Stafford agrees to reported 1-year, $55 million extension for 2027
The Los Angeles Rams drafted Matthew Stafford’s heir apparent about a month ago, but they don’t appear too eager to move on from him.
The NFL MVP has agreed to a one-year, $55 million contract extension that could be worth up to $60 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Stafford was already under contract for 2026, so this deal will make him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL for 2027.
The Rams confirmed the deal minutes after Schefter’s report.

The deal comes only weeks after the Rams drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft, which was the most shocking moment of the night.
Rams head coach Sean McVay made very clear after the first round that Stafford was staying in Los Angeles, though, saying Simpson would instead be competing with Stetson Bennett for the backup job:
“Let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team. You get a chance to be able to address the backup quarterback, we’ve got Stetson, we’ve talked about the importance of [former Rams backup Jimmy Garoppolo].”
You don’t draft a guy 13th overall just to make sure you’re set at backup QB, though. There’s no telling when (or if) Simpson will be ready to take over under center, but the Rams have plenty of reason to be satisfied with Stafford for now.
The 38-year-old just won his first career MVP award after leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns for the Rams, who went 12-5 before falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship game.
The bigger question might be when Stafford opts to retire, but he is now set to receive more than $100 million if he plays in Los Angeles through 2027.
