God Shammgod, who famously helped 10th-seeded Providence reach the Elite Eight during the 1997 NCAA tournament and introduced “The Shammgod” — a streetball-esque crossover move — to the basketball world, will reportedly continue his NBA coaching career in New Orleans.

Shammgod spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant under Jamahl Mosley with the Orlando Magic, and he’s now joining Mosley’s Pelicans staff, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Orlando fired Mosley after the Magic blew a 3-1 lead in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. But it wasn’t long before he got a chance to rebuild another franchise, as New Orleans brought him aboard as its head coach this week.

The Magic won just 22 games in Mosley’s first season at the helm. Each of his last three seasons running the ship, Orlando won at least 41 games. It hadn’t had a stretch like that since it piled up 50-plus victories four seasons in a row under Stan Van Gundy from 2007-11. Unfortunately for Mosley, his Magic teams couldn’t get over the first-round hump in the playoffs.

He’ll have an opportunity to take the Pelicans further, and, per Scotto, Shammgod will be on his bench again.

Shammgod never carved out much of an NBA career — he played only 20 games in the league, all for the Washington Wizards amid the 1997-98 season — but his influence on the game is clear.

He’s revered for his handles, and “The Shammgod” has become one of the most jaw-dropping moves on the hardwood.

Before Mosley hired Shammgod to his Magic staff last summer, Shammgod spent 2016-25 as a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to helping players hone their craft, he served as a defensive assistant.

His coaching career began at his alma mater. At Providence, he also served as a player development coach from 2012-15.

Shammgod is best known for yo-Yo’ing the ball around the court and blending his streetball background with impressive fundamentals. He’s now building a coaching résumé in the NBA, with his latest job reportedly coming in New Orleans.
