Patrick Muldoon was a versatile American actor and musician who first rose to prominence in the early 1990s. Born on September 27, 1968, in San Pedro, California, he initially pursued athletics, playing football for the University of Southern California. However, his striking looks and natural charisma eventually led him toward a successful career in the entertainment industry. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Muldoon became a household name through his work in daytime and primetime television. He was perhaps best known for his role as Austin Reed on the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives, a character he played during the show’s peak popularity in the 90s and later reprised in 2011. His success in daytime television paved the way for his breakout role as Richard Hart on the hit Fox series Melrose Place, where he solidified his status as a popular TV heartthrob. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

In addition to his television success, Muldoon made a significant impact in film. His most recognizable movie role came in 1997 when he played Zander Barcalow in Paul Verhoeven’s cult classic sci-fi film, Starship Troopers. In the film, he played the romantic rival to Casper Van Dien’s protagonist, showcasing his ability to blend action with a competitive, charming persona. Over the years, he maintained a prolific career, appearing in a wide array of independent films, television movies, and guest spots on various series. [11, 12, 13, 14]

Beyond acting, Muldoon is a passionate musician. He was the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band The Sleeping Masses, which contributed music to the soundtrack of the film Spider-Man in 2002. Whether on screen or on stage, Muldoon remained a steady presence in Hollywood for over three decades, evolving from a young soap opera star into a seasoned performer with a diverse body of work across multiple genres.

Patrick Muldoon’s performance in Starship Troopers is a masterclass in balancing rivalry with genuine nobility. As Zander Barcalow, he serves as the sophisticated foil to Johnny Rico, creating a compelling tension as they compete for Carmen Ibanez’s affections. While he initially appears as a smug romantic obstacle, Muldoon elevates the character by grounding him in deep professional integrity. He portrays Zander not just as a suitor, but as a fiercely loyal Fleet officer. This duality shines through in his protective nature toward Carmen; his commitment to her safety and his unwavering dedication to his service make him a hero in his own right, despite the romantic friction.

Patrick Muldoon passed away on Sunday April 19, 2026 at the age of 57.
